What people in Kuthambakkam are saying

12 neighbours have shared what matters to them — in their own words.

“I travel across Chennai several days a week for work, so fuel prices have had a direct impact on my monthly expenses. Personally, I haven't experienced any LPG shortages, but the increase in petrol costs is noticeable. Earlier, I didn't think much about driving longer routes or making extra trips, but now I try to combine errands and plan travel more efficiently. Some colleagues have started carpooling or using public transport more often. While I can still manage these costs, I understand that rising fuel prices can be much more difficult for families and workers whose budgets are already stretched.”

Nearby, the main topics are the significant challenges posed by rising fuel prices ⛽️, which are increasing transportation costs and, consequently, the prices of essential goods like groceries and flowers, directly impacting household budgets and small businesses. Citizens are also grappling with an unusually intense summer heat 🌡️, causing discomfort, exhaustion, and health concerns, especially for outdoor workers, students, and the elderly. Furthermore, the mango season has seen mixed quality and higher prices due to climate irregularities, affecting affordability. However, there are proactive coping mechanisms observed: individuals are optimizing travel, carpooling, and prioritizing hydration, while small shopkeepers are striving to maintain reasonable prices. The overall availability of produce like mangoes generally remains good, and local transport options continue to offer some relief 💡.

“From my experience, there hasn't been a major LPG shortage in our locality, but prices have definitely become a topic of discussion among customers. As a grocery shop owner, I see people paying closer attention to household expenses than before. Fuel costs affect transportation, and when transportation becomes expensive, the prices of vegetables, groceries, and other goods can increase. Customers often ask why prices have gone up, but many of these increases are beyond the control of small shopkeepers. We are trying to keep prices reasonable, but higher fuel costs affect everyone along the supply chain.”

“I have been living in this area for more than twenty years, and I feel mango seasons have changed a lot. Earlier, the fruits used to arrive in large quantities and were very flavorful. Around Kuthambakkam, we usually see Banganapalli, Senthooram, and Malgova varieties. This year, the quality is mixed. Some mangoes are excellent, but many are smaller than usual. The extreme summer temperatures and irregular rainfall seem to have affected production. Prices are also higher than what we used to pay a few years ago. Mangoes are still available everywhere, but many people are buying less because of the cost.”

“I spend most of my time at home these days, but even indoors I have felt that this summer was unusually hot. Earlier, mornings and evenings used to be pleasant, but now the heat seems to continue well into the night. At my age, hot weather can be uncomfortable and sometimes affects sleep. I avoid going outside during the afternoon and keep the curtains closed on the side where the sunlight enters directly. I drink plenty of water, tender coconut water when available, and eat lighter meals. This also causes weight loss because sometimes I cannot eat because of the heat, which becomes difficult to manage. Every year the summers seem to become a little harsher. Many elderly people may find it difficult to cope if this trend continues.”

“Every summer, mangoes are something we look forward to here. In our area, the most common varieties are Banganapalli, Imam Pasand, Malgova, and Neelum. Personally, I like Imam Pasand because of its taste and aroma. This year, the quality has actually been quite good. The fruits are sweet and less fibrous compared to last season. However, the prices were a little high at the beginning because of the heat and transportation costs. Now they have become more affordable. Most vendors in our local market are getting fresh stock regularly, so overall I would say this has been a good mango season for consumers”

“For people like us who work outdoors, this summer has been very challenging. Most of my work involves moving around the apartment complex, checking pumps, cleaning areas, and handling repairs. During the afternoon, the concrete and metal surfaces become extremely hot. By noon, you can feel the heat reflecting from the ground itself. We try to start some of the heavier work earlier in the morning before the sun becomes too strong. I drink a lot of water and buttermilk during the day and take short breaks in shaded areas whenever possible. The heat has definitely increased compared to what I remember from a few years ago.”

“Yes, we have definitely felt the impact of rising fuel prices. I run a small flower stall, and every day flowers have to be transported from wholesale markets to our area. When diesel and petrol prices go up, transportation charges also increase, and that affects our profit. Regarding LPG, I haven't faced a complete shortage, but the cost of refilling cylinders is a concern for many families. We try to manage expenses carefully and avoid unnecessary travel. Customers are also spending less on non-essential purchases, so indirectly the fuel situation affects small businesses like ours.”

    🚶‍♀️ ☀️ 😩

“This summer has been tiring because I travel to different houses every day for work. Usually, I take public transport or walk short distances between places, and the heat has made that much harder. Sometimes by the time I reach the next house, I'm already sweating and feeling exhausted. Sometimes I cannot even carry food, and all my water finishes within a short time. Many households I work in also offer water or cold drinks, which makes a big difference. At home, we try to keep the doors and windows open during the evenings for airflow because running fans all day increases the electricity bill. For working people, this heat is not just uncomfortable—it affects our energy throughout the day”

“This summer has been quite difficult, especially because I spend a lot of time travelling between college, hospitals, and coaching classes. The heat feels much more intense than previous years. Even short walks in the afternoon can be exhausting. What I've noticed is that many people underestimate the effects of dehydration. In the hospital, we often see patients with dizziness, headaches, or heat-related illnesses. Personally, I carry a water bottle everywhere and try to drink fluids regularly, even when I'm not thirsty. I also avoid going out during peak afternoon hours whenever possible. The heat has definitely made studying and concentrating harder because it can be very draining physically.”

“Mangoes are definitely the fruit of summer for us. The varieties I see most often near Kuthambakkam are Banganapalli, Alphonso, Imam Pasand, and Neelum. The taste this season has been good, especially the Banganapalli mangoes. My main concern is the price. A lot of families are finding it difficult to buy mangoes regularly because the rates fluctuate every week. Sometimes the premium varieties are almost treated like luxury fruits. Apart from that, availability has not been a problem. Local shops and roadside vendors have plenty of stock, and the overall quality seems better than last year.”

“I am currently working in India on a temporary project, so it has been interesting to see how people discuss fuel and energy prices here. I have not personally experienced LPG shortages because I live in company-provided accommodation, but I have noticed that many local colleagues are concerned about fuel costs and household expenses. In my daily life, the impact is mostly through transportation and the prices of goods and services. Compared to some countries, India still has many affordable transport options, which helps. However, it is clear that when global events affect energy markets, the consequences are felt by ordinary people everywhere, not just in one country.”

“From a seller's point of view, mangoes are one of the biggest attractions during summer. Customers in this area mostly ask for Banganapalli, Malgova, Imam Pasand, and occasionally Alphonso. This season, customer demand has been strong because the fruits are sweeter and look better than last year. However, suppliers have mentioned that transportation costs and weather conditions affected prices. Some customers complain that good-quality mangoes are expensive, while cheaper ones do not always ripen properly. Even with these challenges, sales have been steady. People still associate summer with mangoes and continue to buy them whenever fresh stock arrives”
